Fresh Market Pop-ups
Those who are familiar with our story know that we were founded with the mission to increase access to healthy food options throughout the city. After years of working to transform traditional retail spaces (corner stores, gas stations, liquor stores) into fresh food oases, we are deepening our work by relying on 5 best practices that we have learned:
- Leverage existing infrastructure, relationships, and knowledge
- Meet people where they are
- Offer multiple entry points
- Sustain a lean cost infrastructure
- Engage community ambassadors
The result is Fresh Market Pop-ups, a low-cost high-impact vehicle to increase access to high-quality, affordable, healthy foods. Through a coordinated neighborhood-by-neighborhood approach, we partner with schools, community centers, recreation centers, hospitals, and senior residential communities to provide weekly pop-up market stands featuring fresh produce and affordable healthy meals and snacks. Stands operate for 1-1.5 hours during naturally occurring high-traffic periods, such as after school when parents are picking up their children or after the Active Older Adults class at the local YMCA.
Thanks to generous support from the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan's Healthy Food Connect and the PespiCo Foundation, we are partnering with Peaches & Greens to host 20 Fresh Market Pop-ups across seven counties every week! What about outcomes?? Based on our early data, we expect to increase fruit/vegetable consumption by 200 per market, 4,000 per week, and 160,000 per year. According to an analysis of the Union of Concerned Scientists’ $11 Trillion Reward Report, each additional serving consumed generates $23.78 in value to society. That's $3,804,800 in value every year!
