Fresh Corner Pop Ups
Those who are familiar with our story know that we were founded with the mission to address the lack of accessible healthy food options throughout the city. After years of working to transform traditional retail spaces (corner stores, gas stations, liquor stores) into fresh food oases, we are transitioning to what we have found to be an almost surprisingly effective model.
Fresh Corner Pop Ups (FCPU) is a low-cost high-impact vehicle to ensure that all Detroiters have access to high quality, affordable, healthy foods. Through a coordinated neighborhood-by-neighborhood approach, FCPU partners with community center host sites to offer a subsidized menu of healthy meals and snacks. Stands operate for 1-1.5 hours during naturally occurring high-traffic periods, such as after school when parents are picking up their children or during regularly occurring programming at the local community center. Fresh salads, wraps, and pasta dishes are priced between $3.00 and $4.00 with fresh cut fruit cups and wholesome local snacks available for $2.00 and under.
We currently pop up in 7 community center locations every week, but this is just the beginning! With two new sites per month, we will be operating 40 weekly pop-ups by May 2017. Based on our early data, we expect to sell an average of 30 healthy meals per pop up, 1,200 meals per week, and 60,000 meals per year across 2,000 individual pop-ups. With an average of 2 fruit/vegetable servings per meal, these pop-ups will increase fruit/vegetable consumption by 120,000 servings per year and contribute $2,853,600 per year** in value to society in increased longevity and medical savings (**each serving valued at $23.78 as inferred from the Union of Concerned Scientists’ $11 Trillion Reward Report).
Thanks to amazing customers like you, we have been able to subsidize this work through a combination of catering profits and external sponsorship. For every additional $2.50 in catering sales and for every $1 in sponsorship we are able to subsidize 1 additional healthy meal. A contribution of $30 sponsors a full pop-up.
We are very grateful to the PepsiCo Foundation for seeding this work with a $25,000 sponsorship at the Giving Tree level. Thank you!
